The Spiritual Exercises of Saint Ignatius
Susan Phillips (Ph.D.) and Jill Boyce (R.N., M.A.)

Thursday, mornings, 9:30-11:30 (2-2.5 hours /meeting), September 17-May 20, cosponsored with and held at First Presbyterian Church of Berkeley, 2407 Dana Street. Cost: $900 for the 30 weeks to be paid to New College Berkeley by August 18. (Partial scholarships available for FPCB members.) The Spiritual Exercises were developed by Ignatius of Loyola in the 16th century.

The Spiritual Exercises were developed by Ignatius of Loyola in the 16th century. They offer a structure to daily living which elicits and encourages experiences of an ongoing relationship with God. The Exercises include learning to pray with our imagination and how to enter into the stories of Jesus so they intersect with our own lives.

Jill Boyce, R.N., M.A., is a spiritual director and chaplain, with a background in health care and advanced education in theology.

Susan S. Phillips (Ph.D.), executive director of New College Berkeley, teaches Christian spirituality at the GTU, Regent College, and Fuller Theological Seminary, and is a spiritual director. She is the author of Candlelight: Illuminating the Art of Spiritual Direction and The Cultivated Life: From Ceaseless Striving to Receiving Joy.

  Writing Your Journey

Wednesdays, 7:10 p.m.-9:10 p.m., September-December, (GTU academic credit available) Cost: $280 Student: $140, Pacific School of Religion, 1798 Scenic Ave., Berkeley, Room: TBA

This is a semester-long course in a small-group format. Participants will be mentored in writing and in reading first-person non-fiction, viewing their lives as spiritual journeys. We will look to the world around us, to the guidance of Scripture, and into our hearts and minds to better understand our life experiences.

Sharon Gallagher (M.T.S.) is New College Berkeley associate director and the editor of Radix magazine. She is the author of Finding Faith: Life-Changing Encounters with Christ.

Fall 2015–Spring 2016. Bay Area locations and times: TBA; Cost: $50/month, to be paid in advance ($450 for the year, including the $50 deposit); space is limited and must be reserved by August 14

We will be offering an opportunity for monthly spiritual direction in a small group committed to a year of fellowship, contemplative listening, and prayer. The groups will be facilitated by trained spiritual directors under the supervision of Susan Phillips. There will be nine monthly two-hour meetings at Bay Area locations.

  Embracing Silence: A Facilitated Retreat
Led by Jill Boyce (M.C. S.) and Sarah Johnson (M.A.)
Saturday, November 7, 9 a.m. - 1 p.m. To be held at a private home in Walnut Creek. Cost: $25 (no lunch)

Join us for a retreat steeped in the rich heritage of Christian silence, contemplative prayer and meditation. We will have times of being led in the practice by two spiritual directors, time for reflection, and time for shared silence. Come be renewed and refreshed in the embrace of God.

Jill Boyce and Sarah Johnson are both spiritual directors who practice in the Bay Area.

Cost: $25 No lunch (limited to a maximum of 25 participants)

Advent is an opportunity to reflect on this adventure into which God invites us. Carve out time in the press toward Christmas to prepare your hearts for walking the Way in the year ahead. Join us for a morning of prayer, reflection, and readying ourselves to continue our great pilgrimage with Christ.
